## Prime Minister Modi to Inaugurate Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to officially open the Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport to the public on Friday.
This ambitious project, which has an estimated cost of Rs 8,900 crores, is situated close to Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala and represents one of India’s most significant port infrastructure developments. It is being executed through a public-private partnership model.
The seaport is a key initiative of the Kerala government and is being built using a landlord model on a design, build, finance, operate, and transfer basis. The private entity involved in this project is Adani Vizhinjam Port Private Ltd., which initiated construction on December 5, 2015.
According to AS Suresh Babu, the former Managing Director and CEO of Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd., there was considerable interest during the tendering phase. He noted that in 2014, the fourth tender attracted nearly five leading companies, although only three went ahead and purchased the tender documents.
Babu further stated that Adani ultimately submitted the winning price bid, and a formal agreement was reached in September 2015. He expressed optimism about the project, highlighting its significance for India and the expertise that Adani brings as the concessionaire.
In a demonstration of its increasing operational capacity, the port welcomed the MSC Turkiye, the world’s largest eco-friendly container ship, in April. This vessel, operated by the Mediterranean Shipping Company, docked at Vizhinjam during its first visit to India.
The port has also shown promising performance metrics. In March, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced that Vizhinjam International Port was ranked first among 15 ports in India’s southern and eastern regions for February, having managed 78,833 twenty-foot equivalent units from 40 vessels.
Vijayan remarked on X that Vizhinjam International Seaport continues to experience impressive growth, marking a significant milestone in the region’s development journey.
