Corporate Affairs Ministry Plans to Remove Over 3,300 Companies from Official Records

The Ministry of Corporate Affairs is preparing to remove the names of over 3,300 companies from its official records following the receipt of applications for their deletion.

According to the most recent data from the ministry, Registrars of Companies (RoCs) in various states and Union Territories issued public notices in April regarding the removal of these companies’ names, in accordance with the Companies Act.

Data indicates that more than 3,300 companies across different states and Union Territories are scheduled to be removed from the official records.

Among these, over 700 companies are located in Maharashtra, nearly 500 in Delhi, more than 350 in Karnataka, and over 200 in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal, among other regions.

The RoCs received applications from these companies under Section 248(2) of the Companies Act for various reasons, such as their failure to commence business within one year of incorporation or not engaging in any business activities for the two consecutive preceding financial years.

These companies have requested the removal of their names from the official records. Under Section 248(2), a company may apply for name removal after settling all liabilities, either through a special resolution or with the consent of 75 percent of its members in terms of paid-up share capital, subject to specific conditions.

The RoCs published public notices in April to determine if there are any objections to the proposed removal of these companies’ names.

As of the end of March this year, there were 1,850,932 active companies out of a total of 2,852,449 registered companies in the country.

“Among the 37 states and Union Territories, Maharashtra (19%) remains the state with the highest number of active companies, followed by Delhi (14%) and West Bengal (8%). An increase in the number of active companies has been noted in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Telangana compared to February 2025. Among the Union Territories, Jammu & Kashmir saw an increase of 143 companies since February 2025,” the ministry stated in its latest monthly information bulletin.
