New Delhi:
In a significant move against Pakistan, India has implemented a complete ban on all imports from its neighboring country, following the recent tensions stemming from the Pahalgam terror attack. This decision has been made in the interest of national security and public policy, and it is stated that it encompasses all goods in transit from Pakistan.
“The import or transit of all goods originating from Pakistan, whether they are generally permitted or not, will be prohibited immediately, pending further orders. This restriction has been established for reasons of national security and public policy. Any exceptions to this ban will require prior approval from the Government of India,” the statement clarified.
The sole trade route between India and Pakistan had already been shut down following the attack at the Wagah-Atari border and Pahalgam incident.
On April 22, militants killed at least 26 civilians, including a Nepali tourist and a local pony guide, at the Baisran Meadow in Jammu and Kashmir. Relations between the two nations have deteriorated, with accusations of terrorist connections attributed to Pakistan.
In response, India has swiftly suspended the Indus Water Treaty, a crucial water-sharing agreement established between the two countries in 1960, citing “ongoing border-crossing terrorism.” This allows India to restrict or divert water flow in the Indus river system, which could impact major water sources for millions of people in Pakistan.
Additionally, India has annulled all visas issued to Pakistani citizens. Those currently residing in India have been given a deadline to exit the country, including those holding medical visas. In retaliation, Pakistan has threatened to terminate all bilateral treaties with India, including the Shimla Agreement. Both countries have also downgraded their diplomatic relations.
