New Delhi: In IPL 2025, a noticeable trend has emerged with umpires inspecting players’ bats. Whenever a batter steps up to the crease, the field umpires utilize specialized equipment to check the bat’s thickness. On the night of May 3, an incident took place that drew significant attention.

This event occurred during the second innings of the match, where Chennai Super Kings were aiming to chase down a target of 214 runs. Mahendra Singh Dhoni entered the field after his team lost two wickets in quick succession during the 17th over. Dhoni had two critical tasks: to prevent Lungi Ngidi from claiming a hat-trick and to secure a victory for his team.

As Dhoni approached the crease to loud cheers, the umpire requested to check his bat. During this inspection, it was determined that Dhoniโ€™s bat did not meet the required standards. Observing this, the experienced wicketkeeper-batsman proceeded to measure the bat himself. Although the gauge indicated that the bat did not pass, Dhoni was still granted permission by the field umpire to continue playing.

According to regulations for T20 matches, a cricket bat must fit through a gauge with specific dimensions: a total depth of 2.68 inches, edges of 4.33 inches and 1.61 inches, and the bat’s curve must not exceed 0.20 inches.

In this match, Dhoni managed to score just 12 runs off 8 balls, and his team ultimately lost by two runs. Fast bowler Yash Dayal secured a memorable victory for RCB by saving 15 runs in the final over. Following this win, RCB climbed to the top of the points table with a total of 16 points from 11 matches and is now poised to reach the playoffs, while Chennai has already been eliminated from playoff contention.
