- New bowlers frequently make appearances in the IPL.
- Bowlers have conceded over 36 runs in a single over.
- Two Indian bowlers hold the record for the costliest over.
New Delhi. In the Indian Premier League (IPL), a new bowler takes the field every day. Each match typically features one or two overs where scoring 25-30 runs is common. However, did you know that there have been instances in this T20 league where over 36 runs were scored in a single over? This has happened not just once, but twice. This embarrassing record belongs to two Indian bowlers: Harshal Patel and Prashant Parameswaran, who both have the unfortunate distinction of conceding 37 runs in a single over.
Prashant Parameswaran was the first to set this undesirable record in IPL history. Back in 2011, he faced the Caribbean superstar Chris Gayle, who played for Royal Challengers Bangalore. During that over, Gayle hit four sixes and three fours, which effectively ended Parameswaran’s IPL career with a staggering 37 runs conceded in that over.
Jadeja scored 36 runs off Harshal’s over
For the second time in IPL history, 37 runs were scored in an over bowled by Harshal Patel. This occurred in 2021 when Ravindra Jadeja of Chennai Super Kings had an explosive over against him. Jadeja achieved this by hitting five sixes and a four, along with two runs on one ball, all in that one over. At that time, Harshal Patel was representing Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Harshal has dismissed Dhoni four times
Despite this setback, Harshal Patel managed to keep his head up and went on to win the Purple Cap in 2021, showcasing an impressive performance throughout the tournament. His efforts earned him a spot on the Indian national team. Notably, he is among the few bowlers who have dismissed MS Dhoni four times in the IPL, and even in IPL 2025, Dhoni fell victim to him.
Parvinder Awana’s expensive over
The third most costly over in IPL history belongs to Daniel Sams, who conceded 35 runs in a single over while playing for Mumbai Indians in 2022 against Kolkata Knight Riders. Indian bowler Parvinder Awana and England’s Ravi Bopara also feature in the top five for expensive overs. Bopara allowed 33 runs in an over in 2010 while playing for Punjab Kings, and four years later, Awana matched that feat, conceding 33 runs in an over for the same team.
