## Inauguration of Vizhinjam International Seaport
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially opened the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala, marking it as India’s first deep-water container transshipment and semi-automated port.
The development of this port was undertaken by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd., recognized as India’s leading port developer and a part of the Adani Group, in partnership with the government through a public-private collaboration.
Kerala’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed a warm welcome to Prime Minister Modi during the port’s commissioning ceremony. He extended gratitude to all individuals involved in the port’s construction, highlighting the sense of unity experienced throughout the project.
## A Symbol of Progress
The Prime Minister referred to the port as an emblem of ‘New Age Development’ and congratulated both the people of Kerala and India. He further mentioned that the hub’s capacity is expected to triple in the future, allowing for large container vessels from around the globe to dock there. He emphasized that the loss of revenue India previously encountered due to the lack of such large ports will soon be resolved. He stated that this development will bring economic opportunities for the residents of Kerala and Vizhinjam.
The Vizhinjam Port is anticipated to become one of the most technologically advanced transshipment ports in the world. Its operations are projected to significantly decrease the turnaround times for vessels and improve India’s ability to accommodate large container ships.
The total cost of the project is approximately Rs 8,900 crore, and it received commercial approval last December after a successful trial phase.
## A Major Infrastructure Boost For Trade
The Vizhinjam Port features state-of-the-art infrastructure, including a 3,000-meter breakwater, recognized as the deepest and longest in India. This structure provides safety and shelter for vessels, functioning similarly to how a house depends on strong walls and a roof for protection. The breakwater acts as a protective barrier against waves, ensuring the safety of the port.
Moreover, the port is outfitted with advanced STS Super Post-Panamax cranes, which operate like enormous robotic arms to efficiently lift containers from ships. The combination of a sturdy breakwater and powerful cranes makes Vizhinjam a reliable and effective location for ships to dock and unload their cargo.
The port has a natural depth of 20 meters, allowing large vessels to navigate without the need for additional dredging efforts to deepen the water. This feature enables Vizhinjam to easily accommodate large container ships.
