Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will not attend Russia’s Victory Day parade, with his deputy, Sanjay Seth, poised to represent India at the event in Moscow this week, according to official sources on Saturday.
This decision to send the Minister of State for Defence to the May 9 ceremony comes in light of escalating tensions between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack.
Initially, Russia had extended an invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to join the Victory Day parade, which commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Germany in World War II. However, it was ultimately determined that Singh would not be participating.
Sources indicate that Seth will take on the role of representing India at the parade.
This year, Russia has invited leaders from several allied nations to take part in the Victory Day celebrations.
Last year, Modi made two visits to Russia for an annual summit with President Vladimir Putin and to attend the BRICS Summit in Kazan.
Additionally, the Russian president is anticipated to travel to India for the annual summit this year.
